A Christmas Miracle: 19-Year-Old Saved by Medical Staff in Palermo
Medical and nursing staff at the Civic hospital in Palermo have been hailed as heroes after saving the life of a 19-year-old girl who suffered a cardiac arrest due to fulminant myocarditis caused by a flu virus. The girl, Giada, was given cardiac massage for an hour and 47 minutes by the medical staff, who took turns keeping her alive until she was hooked up to an ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) machine. This machine allows for extracorporeal circulation, oxygenating the blood and pumping it into the body, giving doctors time to treat the cause of the cardiac arrest.
A Complex Intervention with a Happy Ending
The incident occurred on the night of November 26th, but the news was only made public recently. Giada did not suffer any brain damage and has since been transferred from the intensive care unit to the cardiology department. Her family has expressed their gratitude to the medical staff, praising their “scrupulous and competent” care. The emergency room and resuscitation team at the Civic hospital have been recognized as departments of excellence, and the family has thanked them for giving Giada “not only care, but an infinite love that transformed her little world into a place of hope.”
A Symbol of Hope and Gratitude
The doctors and nurses who worked together to save Giada’s life gave her a large soft toy as a symbol of their care and dedication. When they stabilized her condition, they told her family, “We did everything and the rest no longer depended on us. We deployed all the skills and all the tools available. The rest goes further.” The medical staff also left a heartfelt message on Giada’s leg bandage, signing it “With love from the best team. We love you.” The president of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, has expressed his “sincere thanks and deep appreciation” to the medical staff for their “extraordinary professionalism and commitment” in saving Giada’s life.
A Testament to Good Healthcare
Schifani described the intervention as a “complex operation, conducted with competence, dedication, and a spirit of service, which represents a concrete example of good healthcare.” He added that this is the kind of excellence, sacrifice, and humanity that Sicily should be proud of and strive to valorize. Giada’s story is a testament to the importance of skilled medical professionals and the impact they can have on people’s lives. For more information on this heartwarming story, visit Here
