A 104-Year-Old Woman’s Miraculous Recovery from a Heart Attack
On Christmas Eve, a 104-year-old woman from Melfi, Potenza, suffered an acute myocardial infarction, but thanks to the prompt and skilled intervention of the Invasive Cardiology team at the San Carlo hospital in Potenza, she was able to receive life-saving treatment. The woman was quickly transferred from her home to the hospital’s haemodynamics room by the 118 Basilicata emergency service, where she underwent a delicate coronary angioplasty operation.
A Delicate Operation with a Positive Outcome
According to Rocco Grippo, an interventional cardiologist, “despite the very advanced age and high clinical complexity of the patient, we promptly proceeded with emergency interventional treatment, allowing for the revascularization of the coronary artery responsible for the ischemic event, without procedural complications.” The operation was a success, and the woman’s life was saved. The general director of the San Carlo hospital, Giuseppe Spera, emphasized that “in conditions of such advanced age, it is not possible to manage a heart attack with pharmacological therapy alone, and emergency angioplasty represents a life-saving procedure.”
A Testimony to the Hospital’s Excellence
The positive outcome of the procedure is a testament to the high level of competence, experience, and dedication of the cardiology team at the San Carlo regional hospital, as well as the efficiency of the intra-hospital organization. The hospital’s press release highlighted the importance of coordination with the staff of the emergency service, cardiac intensive care unit, and nursing and technical staff, which ensured continuous and timely assistance. The San Carlo hospital has once again demonstrated its ability to provide excellent care and continuity of care, even on holidays, with the protection of life and the person at the center.
