Rome’s Caelian Hill to Undergo Major Revitalization with New Green Spaces and Panoramic Views

Rome is embarking on an exciting new project to revitalize the Celio Park, a previously neglected area on the Caelian Hill, situated between the iconic Colosseum and the ancient Circus Maximus. The city’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, recently unveiled the plans at the newly opened Casina del Salvi, a charming coffee house and study hall within the archaeological park.

The redevelopment project is part of the larger “CArMe” initiative, a comprehensive program aimed at revitalizing Rome’s central archaeological area, with a significant investment of €282 million from the Jubilee, PNRR, and the city’s budget. This ambitious undertaking will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area but also provide new amenities and services for residents and tourists alike.

Enhancing the Celio Park Experience

The Parco del Celio has already seen significant improvements, including the opening of the Forma Urbis museum, which features a stunning glass floor with fragments of a massive marble map of the city, created in the early third century by Emperor Septimius Severus. Additionally, the Casina del Salvi has been beautifully restored to its original function as a coffee house, offering a unique and tranquil atmosphere for visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

The new project, valued at €2.4 million, will focus on creating a lush green space by “depaving” and planting a 4,000-sqm area, primarily along the tram tracks. This innovative approach, commonly seen in other European cities, will not only improve the park’s aesthetic appeal but also provide a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city. The project will also introduce a “belvedere” or viewing point, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Colosseum, as well as a new walkway along the hill on the side of Via di San Gregorio.

Connecting the City’s Historic Landmarks

The revitalization project will also restore a direct walkway between the Colosseum and the Celio, as well as a path linking Via Claudia to the Casina del Salvi. Furthermore, the city has recently completed a new pedestrian path and cycle lane on Via di San Gregorio, enhancing the overall connectivity and accessibility of the area. These improvements will not only benefit locals but also enrich the experience of tourists and history enthusiasts exploring Rome’s ancient treasures.
