Revitalizing Ostia Antica: A New Train Station and UNESCO Bid
The ancient port city of Ostia Antica, located on the outskirts of Rome, is set to undergo a significant transformation with the renovation of its train station, thanks to an €8.4 million investment from Jubilee funds. This project coincides with Italy’s plans to seek UNESCO World Heritage status for the site, recognizing its immense cultural and archaeological importance.
According to Lazio president Francesco Rocca, the renovation aims to “restore dignity and beauty” to the train station, which dates back to the late 1950s. The project involves expanding the existing passenger building, adding new toilets, upgrading elevators, and installing new walkways, including facilities for visitors with disabilities. This overhaul will not only enhance the overall travel experience but also provide better accessibility for tourists and locals alike.

Ostia Antica’s Rich History and UNESCO Bid
Ostia Antica was founded in the seventh century BC as the port of Rome, but due to silting, it now lies about three kilometers inland. The site boasts an impressive array of well-preserved ruins, including a remarkably intact ancient Roman theatre and numerous houses, from insulae apartment blocks to private homes with mosaic floors. Italy’s culture minister, Alessandro Giuli, has expressed commitment to nominating the site for UNESCO World Heritage Status, drawing comparisons to Pompeii.
Giuli emphasized the need for urban regeneration to accompany the UNESCO bid, integrating the ancient with the contemporary. Lazio president Rocca shares this vision, aiming to transform Ostia into a symbol of international appeal. The renovation of the train station is a significant step towards achieving this goal, enhancing the overall visitor experience and showcasing the site’s cultural and historical significance.
