According to Simeup’s national president, Vincenzo Tipo, the traditional focus on traumatic injuries caused by fireworks has overshadowed a growing concern – the increase in respiratory disorders related to inhaling fumes produced by pyrotechnic materials.
Changing Trends in Firework Use
Tipo notes that the methods of firework use have changed over the years, with a shift from traditional firecrackers to pyrotechnic fires that produce a luminous and scenographic effect, often lasting longer and releasing more fine particulate matter and irritating chemical substances into the air. These substances can cause irritation of the respiratory tract, persistent cough, bronchospasm, and breathing difficulty, posing a significant risk to children’s health.
Vulnerability of Children
Children, particularly those in the first years of life and with pre-existing respiratory pathologies such as asthma, recurrent bronchitis, or bronchiolitis, are especially vulnerable to the effects of firework smoke. According to Tipo, it is not uncommon to observe a flare-up of symptoms even hours after exposure. Data collected in pediatric emergency rooms shows an estimated 40-45% increase in admissions for respiratory problems in the days following December 31st, highlighting the need for prudence and prevention to reduce children’s exposure to avoidable risk factors.
