Venice Opera Controversy: Mayor Brugnaro Defends New Musical Director

The mayor of Venice and president of the Fenice, Luigi Brugnaro, has reiterated his support for the new musical director of the opera institution, Beatrice Venezi. Despite the controversy surrounding her appointment, Brugnaro believes that Venezi deserves a chance to prove herself. In a recent statement, he suggested organizing a trip to a neutral location where Venezi can meet with the orchestra and determine if they can work together.

A Call for Peace and Agreement

Brugnaro’s statement came before the 23rd edition of the New Year’s Concert, which took place on January 1st. The event was conducted by Maestro Michele Mariotti, and despite the orchestra and choir’s initial announcement to boycott the concert, they ultimately decided to participate. However, they showed their dissent by wearing golden pins with a treble clef, which was also worn by Maestro Mariotti in a silent show of solidarity.

Brugnaro emphasized the need for open communication and agreement among all parties involved. He stated that he wants to “ask for peace, to make agreements” and believes that finding a way to verify the situation without prevarications or protagonisms is essential. The mayor also expressed his commitment to supporting young people and finding a balance between conservative and progressive positions.

Corporate Welfare and Financial Concerns

The issue of corporate welfare has also been a point of contention, with the Foundation’s decision to block it seen as a form of retaliation against the staff’s protests. Brugnaro has indicated that he is open to unlocking welfare in January, pending a review of the accounts. He justified his initial decision to block welfare by citing the need for prudence as an administrator.

The New Year’s Concert was a success, with a program dedicated to Italian melodrama and featuring performances by soprano Rosa Feola and tenor Jonathan Tetelman. The event also included a ballet performance by the Rome Opera company, which was broadcast on Rai1.
