Ton Koopman to Inaugurate 2026 Symphony Season at Teatro Comunale of Bologna
Ton Koopman, the renowned Dutch harpsichordist and conductor, is set to kick off the 2026 symphony season at the Teatro Comunale of Bologna on January 10. With a career spanning over four decades, Koopman has been a prominent figure in the Bolognese musical scene, having performed with his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir and presented various philological versions of iconic works, including Mozart’s Magic Flute and Bach’s Passions.
A Pioneer in Ancient Music
Koopman is widely regarded as a pioneer and one of the most accredited interpreters of music according to the performance practice of the composition era. His expertise lies in the field of ancient music, and his return to Bologna will see him leading a modern symphonic ensemble, the Bolognese Foundation, for the first time. The program will feature works by Mozart and Haydn, including the Nocturnal Serenade No. 6 K 239, the Coronation Mass K 317, and Symphony No. 100, also known as the “Military” Symphony.
Mozart’s Nocturne Serenade and Haydn’s “Military” Symphony
Mozart’s Nocturne Serenade, written in 1776, is a three-movement piece that showcases an original dialogue between two small orchestral groups, reminiscent of the ancient concerto Grosso. Haydn’s “Military” Symphony, on the other hand, owes its name to the Allegretto, where the composer cleverly incorporates the sound of a trumpet fanfare, giving the symphony its distinctive title. The “Military” Symphony was enthusiastically received in London in 1794 and has since become a beloved classic.
The Coronation Mass and Upcoming Performances
The Coronation Mass, which will close the evening, is a masterpiece that combines liturgical solemnity and symphonic breath, showcasing Mozart’s great theatrical interest. This interest would later be demonstrated in his composition of Idomeneo, a work that will inaugurate the Comunale’s opera season on January 24. The Coronation Mass will feature the soprano Suzanne Jerosme, mezzo-soprano Lara Morger, tenor Kieran White, and bass Peter Harvey, along with the Municipal Choir prepared by Gea Garatti Ansini.
