Seasonal Flu Outbreak Overwhelms Calabrian Hospitals

The recent surge in seasonal flu cases has led to a significant increase in emergency room admissions at major hospitals in Calabria, Italy. According to reports, the hospitals in Cosenza, Reggio Calabria, and Catanzaro have experienced a substantial influx of patients, with many requiring hospitalization due to severe respiratory complications. In the 48 hours surrounding New Year’s Eve, Cosenza’s hospitals recorded nearly 600 admissions, resulting in around 50 hospitalizations. Similarly, Reggio Calabria’s hospitals managed over 400 patients during the same period, while Catanzaro’s hospitals saw a massive influx of patients, particularly in the last few days.

Respiratory Complications and Virus Strains

The most severe cases involved patients with respiratory complications, pneumonia, and respiratory failure, with some being admitted to intensive care units. The predominant virus strain circulating in the region is influenza A/H1N1, with a notable increase in the H3 variant. This information comes from the emergency room managers of Catanzaro, Reggio Calabria, and Cosenza, who anticipate the peak of infections to occur in mid-January, coinciding with the reopening of schools and the increase in social contacts during the Christmas period.

Expert Insights and Hospital Capacity

Giuseppe Masciari, head of the emergency room at the Dulbecco University Hospital in Catanzaro, stated that “we have entered the height of the flu peak, with a significant number of visits that had been expected for some time. The most affected patients were mainly elderly and frail with multiple pathologies, even if there were no shortage of hospitalizations of younger people. The virus most encountered was A/H1N1.” Paolo Costantino, head of the emergency room at the large metropolitan hospital of Reggio Calabria, emphasized that the complications of the flu, particularly H1N1 and H3, have mainly affected the elderly and fragile subjects, but the greatest difficulty has been the lack of beds. Andrea Bruni, director of the Emergency-Urgency department of Cosenza, reported that some patients were admitted to intensive care and were not mainly elderly people, often vaccinated, but relatively young people with concomitant pathologies.

Hospital Response and Relief Measures

In response to the influx of patients, Cosenza’s hospital has activated a “Flu Point,” an extraordinary clinic designed to manage less urgent cases and alleviate congestion in the emergency room. This measure aims to reduce the workload on the hospital’s emergency services and provide more efficient care to patients. As the situation continues to unfold, it is essential for hospitals and healthcare authorities to work together to ensure that patients receive the necessary care and attention.
