Unveiling the Treasures of Federigo Tozzi’s Archive

The literary world has witnessed a significant milestone with the transfer of a second block from the archive of Federigo Tozzi (1883-1920) to the contemporary Bonsanti Archive of the Gabinetto Vieusseux in Florence. This remarkable collection, previously housed on the Castagneto farm in Siena, has found a new home in Palazzo Corsini Suarez, where an entire room has been dedicated to it. The archive is a treasure trove of documents, notable for its size and importance, and has been carefully guarded by Silvia Tozzi.

A Glimpse into Tozzi’s Personal Library

The archive contains a significant portion of Tozzi’s personal library, featuring works of philosophy, classical authors (Greek and Latin), and literary texts in Italian, French, English, and German. This vast collection provides a unique insight into the writer’s intellectual pursuits and interests. The Bonsanti Archive, now home to Tozzi’s papers and books, offers a space for visitors to explore, upon reservation, and delve into the writer’s world.

A Living and Pulsating Place of Culture

According to Riccardo Nencini, president of the Gabinetto Vieusseux, the Archive is a “living and pulsating place” that has been a treasure chest of literary and artistic treasures for fifty years. The arrival of Tozzi’s private library and the dedication of a room to the writer underscore the Institute’s importance, both nationally and internationally. As Michele Rossi, director of the Cabinet, explains, Tozzi’s private archive has been transferred to Florence from the Sienese house of Castagneto on several occasions, with the first folders arriving in 1998 and the remaining books being transferred in 2025.

A Testament to the Institute’s Commitment

The transfer of Tozzi’s archive to the Bonsanti Archive is a testament to the Institute’s commitment to preserving and promoting literary and artistic heritage. The original manuscripts of Tozzi’s works are now deposited at the Archive, thanks to the will of Silvia Tozzi. This significant addition to the Archive’s collection highlights the importance of the Institute in preserving the cultural legacy of notable figures like Federigo Tozzi.
