Introduction to MaestraNatura: Educating for a Sustainable Future
The MaestraNatura project, developed by the Higher Institute of Health (ISS) with the contribution of the Ministry of Health, aims to educate primary and lower secondary school students about the importance of healthy eating habits and sustainable lifestyles. This initiative has already been tested on over 55,000 students, promoting reflection on individual roles in building a more environmentally aware and respectful future. The project’s activities are diverse, ranging from scientific experiments to cooking workshops, and are designed to encourage critical thinking and informed decision-making.
Project Activities and Objectives
The MaestraNatura project encompasses a wide range of activities, including the construction of weekly menus, observations on seed germination, and discussions on nutrients, energy balance, and food waste. These activities are tailored to different age groups, with more complex issues addressed in secondary schools. The project also focuses on critical analysis of information, enabling students to distinguish reliable data from misinformation. By participating in these activities, students develop essential skills for making informed choices about their diet and lifestyle.
Key Findings and Insights
The study phase of the project has identified common misconceptions among young people, which often persist into adulthood and negatively impact the adoption of healthy eating principles. Data collected during the project reveals that many students’ eating habits can be improved, with low consumption of fruits and vegetables and a reliance on packaged snacks. Interestingly, the study also found clear gender differences in eating habits among 8- to 14-year-olds, with girls eating more vegetables and dried fruit, while boys drink more water and consume more biscuits and industrial snacks.
Call to Action: Join the MaestraNatura Competition
As part of the MaestraNatura project, a competition is being held for primary and lower secondary school classes. The theme of the competition is “Food and health of the planet, sustainability as a lifestyle: small actions that change the future.” Schools are invited to creatively represent this theme, documenting their ideas, experiences, and reflections on sustainability. Interested schools must submit their membership form by January 31, 2026, to infomaestranatura@iss.it. By participating in this competition, schools can encourage their students to think critically about sustainability and develop innovative solutions for a more environmentally conscious future.
