Italy’s Center-Left Unites Against Justice Reform

A strong “no” to justice reform is the stance taken by Italy’s center-left, with the aim of defending democracy and the Constitution from the government’s “authoritarian management” that could potentially “enslave” magistrates. This comes after Giorgia Meloni’s criticism of the judiciary for allegedly hindering security efforts. The center-left has united in its opposition to the reform, with leaders from various parties meeting in Rome to launch their campaign against the proposed changes.

A United Front Against the Reform

The meeting, attended by leaders such as Elly Schlein and Giuseppe Conte, marked the beginning of the battle to win the referendum. Schlein emphasized that the goal is not to control the judiciary but to ensure that it remains independent and subject to checks and balances. Conte warned of the dangers of a “yes” vote, which he believes could lead to the return of a “caste of untouchable politicians” and the erosion of citizens’ rights. The event was also attended by representatives from around a hundred associations, including the CGIL, Anpi, Acli, Arci, Auser, Libera, Legambiente, and Libertà e Giustizia, all of which are opposed to the reform.

The Referendum Campaign Begins

The start of the referendum campaign coincides with the launch of the ‘Civil society for the no’ committee, led by Giovanni Bachelet. The committee has collected over 300,000 signatures and has the support of various notable figures, including physics Nobel Prize winner Giorgio Parisi, writer Maurizio De Giovanni, and former Keeper of the Seals, Clemente Mastella. Bachelet emphasized the need for “constitutional patriotism” and warned of the “trap” of the Nordio reform, which he believes would undermine the independence of judges. The CGIL’s secretary, Maurizio Landini, urged immediate mobilization, stating that the consultation does not require a quorum and that “whoever gets one more vote wins.”

Democracy and the Constitution at Stake

Schlein and Landini both emphasized the importance of defending democracy and the Constitution. Schlein warned that democracy is not a “blank check” for those in power, but rather a system of checks and balances between different powers. Landini criticized the government’s “authoritarian will” and its management of the country. The debate surrounding the reform has also highlighted divisions within the Democratic Party, with some members supporting the reform and others opposing it. Giorgio Mulè of Forza Italia noted that there are those on the left who support the reform, citing the demonstration scheduled for Monday in Florence.
