Pausini sings “Due vite” and the case breaks out: Mengoni’s fans attack, the singer’s staff replies

Marco Mengoni’s Fans React to “The Last Song” Cover

The recent release of “The Last Song” (literally translated as “The Last Song”), a half-Italian and half-French cover of “Due vite” by Marco Mengoni and Julien Lieb, has sparked a heated debate among Mengoni’s fans. The song, which features the talented vocalist Lieb, who rose to fame after coming second in the Star Academy talent show and launching his debut album “Shipwrecked” in 2025, has received mixed reactions from fans.

What has caused more discussion than the reinterpretation itself are the responses to comments on social media by Mengoni’s staff. When a fan posted “Beautiful song and beautiful duet of voices but, with all due respect, this song must only be sung by Mengoni!”, the staff replied, “That is, no fan (like Laura is of Marco) can therefore sing it and pay homage to him? What a strange concept of sharing music.” This response has led to a wider discussion about the nature of music sharing and fan engagement.

Reactions to Criticism

When a user simply wrote “I don’t like” in response to the song, Mengoni’s staff replied, “Actually this is not an investigative site. No content is published to know if it is good or not. Don’t like it? Perfect. Writing it to her, what purpose did it serve you? To give her a displeasure? What else?” This response has been seen as dismissive and has further fueled the debate. Additionally, when a fan questioned whether Mengoni could still create her own songs, the staff responded, “We are not launching a tribute album to Italian singer-songwriters. Didn’t she realize that we have been preparing the launch of the cover album Io canto 2 for 6 months? Maybe a distraction?”

Defending the Singer

Fiorello, a well-known Italian TV personality, has come to Mengoni’s defense, stating, “You, a Mengoni fan, cannot throw mud at anyone who dares to sing a song. A cover is a tribute, a certificate of esteem. Songs belong to everyone, there is no way a song is untouchable.” This statement highlights the importance of respecting artistic interpretation and the value of covers in the music industry.

Meanwhile, the announcement of Laura Pausini’s co-management of the Sanremo 2026 Festival alongside Carlo Conti has also sparked controversy. Despite being one of the most awarded Italian artists on the international scene, with 75 million records sold worldwide, Pausini’s involvement in the festival has been met with criticism. However, her success on the Ariston stage, including her first-place win in 1992 with “La solitude” and third-place finish in 1993 with “Strani amori”, is undeniable.

After the backlash, comments on the social media post announcing the release of Mengoni’s cover were blocked. This move comes after Mengoni announced his decision to distance himself from social media in December, citing the platforms as “places of hate and anger”. However, his staff’s responses to criticism suggest that they may not have fully understood the singer’s intentions.
