Republic’s 50th Anniversary: A Celebration of Journalism and Independence
ROME – Journalism is like art, «when it is done well, it changes people’s lives, for this reason Republic it is also a great service to the country.” This statement, made by Lorenzo Jovanotti, encapsulates the essence of Republic‘s 50th anniversary celebration. The event, held at the Rome Auditorium, was a grand party that brought together journalists, old and new, to commemorate the newspaper’s milestone.
A Family Celebration
The director, Mario Orfeo, defined the celebration as “a family party,” which was evident in the presence of loyal readers who filled the magnificent Sinopoli room. Some attendees even traveled from far away by train or plane to join in the festivities. The evening was filled with emotion and laughter, as comedian Geppi Cucciari took the stage to introduce his monologue with the notes of the Greek sirtaki, paying homage to the possible new owner’s nationality. Michele Serra also used satire to imagine a calendar for the next few months with a happy ending, where journalists start anew by mimeographing Republic.
A Legacy of Independence
Republic has always been known for its independence and freedom, which was evident in its first editorial, written by Eugenio Scalfari. The newspaper’s commitment to transparency and accountability has generated appreciation but also formidable adversaries. Massimo Giannini listed some of the notable battles against the powerful of the day, including Giulio Andreotti and Silvio Berlusconi. Ezio Mauro shared his recipe for success, which included suffering and rejoicing together with the journalists, and Luca Zingaretti read the first editorial of Eugenio Scalfari, highlighting the newspaper’s purpose and identity.
A Celebration of Journalism
The evening passed between emotion and laughter, with Corrado Augias interviewed by Annalisa Cuzzocrea, sharing memories of the pioneering times and Eugenio Scalfari‘s “revolutions.” The grand finale featured the songs of Georgie with Roberto Benigni and Jovanotti, who dedicated a verse by the poet Pierluigi Cappello to the audience.
Conclusion
The 50th anniversary celebration of Republic was a testament to the newspaper’s commitment to independence, freedom, and journalism. As Mario Orfeo stated, “We will never give up this independence and this freedom. We will always defend them.” The event was a celebration of the newspaper’s legacy and its continued relevance in today’s world. For more information, visit Here
