Zelensky, Europe’s political will towards Putin is lacking

Volodymyr Zelensky Addresses the Lack of EU Action Against Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently spoke at the Davos conference, where he drew a stark comparison between the situation in Ukraine and the film “Groundhog Day”. He expressed his frustration with the repetitive nature of the conflict, stating that “no one would want to live like this, repeating the same thing for weeks, months and, of course, four years”. This sentiment reflects the ongoing struggles faced by Ukraine as it continues to battle Russian aggression.

A Year of Inaction

Zelensky noted that in his speech at Davos last year, he emphasized the need for Europe to know how to defend itself. However, he lamented that a year has passed and nothing has changed. The Ukrainian President criticized the lack of “political will” from the EU towards Putin, highlighting the need for concrete action to address the ongoing conflict. He thanked Europe for freezing Russian assets but pointed out that when it came time to use those assets to help defend Ukraine, the decision was “blocked”.

Stalled Progress on Russian Aggression Tribunal

Zelensky also expressed disappointment at the lack of progress in establishing a tribunal on Russian aggression. He questioned whether the delay was due to a lack of time or political will, emphasizing the need for swift action to hold Russia accountable for its actions. The Ukrainian President noted that while Europe has been successful in freezing Russian assets, the decision to use these assets to support Ukraine has been hindered. Similarly, the establishment of a tribunal on Russian war crimes has seen “no real progress”, with Zelensky asking whether this is due to a lack of time or political will.

Dependence on International Support

Zelensky highlighted the importance of international support in Ukraine’s efforts to defend itself against Russian aggression. He noted that Europe seems to be waiting for the President of the United States to change his stance, but emphasized that this is unlikely to happen. The Ukrainian President pointed out the disparity in treatment between different world leaders, citing the example of Maduro being put on trial in New York while Putin remains unpunished. Zelensky expressed his gratitude to partners for their security guarantees but emphasized the need for a unified international response to the conflict.
