Anthropic Updates Rules for AI Chatbot to Ensure Safe and Responsible Interactions
Anthropic, a leading company in the artificial intelligence sector, has recently updated its set of rules to prevent its chatbot, Claude, from engaging in inappropriate, dangerous, or harmful actions. The updated rules, published in a document titled “Claude’s new constitution,” aim to ensure that the AI system provides responsible and safe interactions with users, particularly on sensitive topics such as health, politics, and conversations with minors.
Enhanced Limits on Sensitive Topics
The updated version of the rules imposes further limits on the responses that Claude can provide on sensitive topics, including health, politics, and conversations with minors, especially in relation to self-harm and suicide. According to Anthropic’s website, “We do not want Claude to express personal opinions on controversial political issues such as abortion, make discriminatory jokes, or cause concrete damage such as synthesizing dangerous chemical substances or biological weapons.” These guidelines demonstrate the company’s commitment to ensuring that its AI system is used in a responsible and ethical manner.
Comparison with Competitors and Industry Standards
In December, Anthropic’s competitor, OpenAI, updated its document on the functioning of ChatGpt, called “model spec,” to include new indicators referring to the chatbot’s behavior in conversations with minors and on sensitive topics, such as suicide. The new version of the “Claude constitution” addresses the same issues, highlighting the importance of responsible AI development in the industry. As stated in the document, “The AI must follow guidelines on suicide and self-harm in cases where users raise such topics, using common sense to evaluate a user’s requests.”
Publication and Industry Engagement
The updated document was published in conjunction with the participation of Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, at the World Economic Forum in Davos. This move demonstrates the company’s commitment to transparency and accountability in AI development, as well as its engagement with the broader industry and stakeholders. By publishing these guidelines, Anthropic aims to promote a safe and responsible AI ecosystem.
