Recognizing the Crucial Role of Veterinarians in Global Health

The world is waking up to the vital role veterinarians play in protecting not just animal health, but also human health and the environment. A staggering 70% of emerging infections, including avian influenza and the West Nile virus, originate from animals. This stark reality has led to the establishment of the National Day for Veterinary Prevention, which will be celebrated for the first time on January 25th with 102 initiatives across Italy.

The Importance of Veterinary Prevention

The National Day for Veterinary Prevention aims to raise awareness about the significance of veterinary prevention in maintaining public health. As emphasized by Senator Maria Cristina Cantù, “veterinary prevention is closely connected to the health of citizens, and it is essential to adopt a One Health approach that considers the health of people, animals, and the environment.” The vice-president of the Council, Matteo Salvini, also highlighted the importance of animal welfare, stating that “animal welfare is also human welfare.”

Government Support and Initiatives

The Minister of Agriculture, Francesco Lollobrigida, stressed the fundamental role of veterinarians in various areas, including public health, animal welfare, and food safety. The government has urged the Ministry of University to open new veterinary courses, such as the one at the University of Tor Vergata in Rome. Additionally, the Undersecretary of Health, Marcello Gemmato, emphasized the need for public veterinary services to control zoonoses, diseases transmissible from animals to humans.

Challenges Facing the Veterinary Profession

Despite the importance of veterinarians, the profession is facing challenges, including a decline in numbers. The president of the National Association of Italian Veterinary Doctors (Anmvi), Marco Melosi, highlighted the need to encourage young people to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, citing the “demographic winter” affecting the profession. Economic resources and an attractive public image of veterinary medicine are also necessary to attract new generations.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the National Day for Veterinary Prevention serves as a reminder of the critical role veterinarians play in protecting global health. As stated by Aldo Grasselli, national secretary of Sivemp, “veterinarians play a crucial role every day in official controls, animal health, animal welfare, and the protection of agro-zootechnical-food supply chains.” To learn more about the importance of veterinary prevention and the initiatives being taken, visit Here
