Egypt’s Collaboration with Italy to Uncover the Truth About Giulio Regeni’s Death
Egypt’s collaboration with Italy to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Giulio Regeni’s death remains a crucial test case, not only for uncovering the truth but also for protecting international relations. Italian President Sergio Mattarella has emphasized the importance of this case, stating that “truth and justice must not lend themselves to compromise.” The brutal murder of the young Italian researcher, which occurred 10 years ago, represents an open wound in the national community, and Mattarella has reiterated the universal principles of justice and respect for human rights, condemning any form of torture.

A Call for Truth and Justice
Mattarella’s message was conveyed during a demonstration in Fiumicello, where Regeni’s mother, Paola Deffendi, thanked the president for his “really welcome” letter and urged those with plans to travel to Egypt to reconsider, inviting them to tear up their tickets. The president praised the “admirable example of courage and determination” shown by Regeni’s family, who continue to seek clarity on the circumstances surrounding their son’s death and to ensure that such atrocities are not forgotten.

Opposition Voices and Institutional Support
Elly Schlein, secretary of the Democratic Party, underscored the horror of the events that emerged during the investigation, stating that the battle for truth and justice should have been a collective effort involving all institutions, politics, and the European Union. Schlein criticized the normalization of relations between Italy and Egypt, pointing out that Italian companies continue to do business with Egypt and that the EU has agreed to support the Egyptian economy with over 7 billion euros, primarily to block migratory flows. The Democratic Party voted against this agreement and has pledged to continue doing so.

Continued Demand for Truth and Justice
Nicola Fratoianni of Avs and Roberto Fico, president of the Campania Region, have joined the call for truth and justice, vowing not to give up in the pursuit of accountability for Regeni’s murder. Riccardo Magi, secretary of +Europa, finds it unacceptable that the Italian government has not put sufficient pressure on Egypt to uncover the truth, instead considering Egypt a safe country. Feerica Onori of Azione has also urged institutions not to let their guard down and to continue demanding truth and responsibility, emphasizing that the passage of time does not diminish the need for justice.
