Severe Weather Wreaks Havoc in Italy: Regions Hit with Billions in Damages
The recent severe weather in Italy has left a trail of destruction, with estimated damages exceeding 1.5 billion euros in Sicily alone, according to the region’s president, Renato Schifani. The storm, which brought a significant part of the tourist-hotel industry to its knees, has raised concerns about the collapse of tourist structures in the affected areas.
Assessment of the Damage
Schifani noted that the initial reconnaissance has revealed a tendency to exceed 1.5 billion euros in direct and indirect damages, with the full extent of the damage still emerging. The president emphasized the need for a prevention plan to defend anthropized areas, such as those inhabited by citizens or tourist structures, from similar storms in the future.
The president of the Calabria Region, Roberto Occhiuto, estimated the damages in Calabria to be around 300 million euros, while the president of the Sardinia Region, Alessandra Todde, highlighted the need for timely intervention, especially in Olbia, where a third of the municipalities in Sardinia have suffered damage.
Government Response
The Italian government has convened an extraordinary Council of Ministers to declare a state of emergency in the affected regions. Schifani appreciated the Prime Minister’s acceleration in convening the council, which will allow for faster intervention and allocation of funds. The government is expected to provide an initial allocation to proceed with urgent work and other measures with a more substantial financial endowment.
Occhiuto emphasized the need for a provision to compensate those who have lost their businesses, while Todde called for a single direction and loyal collaboration between the government and the Sardinia Region.
Reconstruction and Prevention
Schifani underlined the importance of reflecting on the future organization and protection of coastal strips according to changes in the ecosystem. He noted that the region will have to get used to big fires and big storms and that a prevention plan is necessary to defend anthropized areas. The president also highlighted the need for a reconstruction plan to ensure the construction of destroyed seaside resorts and houses by the summer.
The situation in Italy serves as a reminder of the importance of investing in prevention and mitigation measures to reduce the impact of severe weather events. As the regions begin the process of recovery and reconstruction, it is essential to prioritize the needs of those affected and work towards creating more resilient communities.
