Supporting Multiple Sclerosis Research through Bequests: A Week of Awareness

The National Week of Bequests of Aism – Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association is returning from 26 January to 1 February 2026, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of bequests in supporting research and services for people with multiple sclerosis. For over twenty years, this event has been dedicated to informing and educating the public about the value of bequests, which represent a crucial tool for the sustainability of Aism’s activities and its Foundation.

The Impact of Bequests on Multiple Sclerosis Research

Bequests allow Aism to guarantee essential services, support scientific research, and improve the quality of life of people with multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, and related pathologies. According to Mario Alberto Battaglia, president of Fism, the Aism Foundation, “Scientific research has already profoundly transformed the history of multiple sclerosis, but stable, long-term investments are needed to continue progressing. Bequests represent a fundamental resource for supporting innovative studies and making research increasingly closer to people possible.” With over 144 thousand people living with multiple sclerosis in Italy and 3,650 new diagnoses per year, the need for continued research and support is pressing.

Practical Information and Guidance

During the National Week of Bequests, around 40 meetings are scheduled throughout Italy, organized in collaboration with the National Council of Notaries and with the support of the National Federation of Pensioners Cisl. Notaries will offer practical information and answers to common questions about testamentary successions and joint bequests. Additionally, a free guide to bequests, created with the National Council of Notaries, is available at the toll-free number 800-094464 and on the website aism.it/lasciti. This guide aims to provide guidance and support for those considering making a bequest.

A Choice of Responsibility and Trust

Francesco Vacca, president of Aism, emphasizes that a bequest “is a choice of responsibility and trust in the future. It is a gesture that allows Aism to plan long-lasting interventions.” Solidarity bequests are becoming an increasingly important resource for the Third Sector, with the share of non-profit organizations receiving at least one bequest growing by 16 percentage points between 2020 and 2024. By making a bequest to Aism, individuals can support specific initiatives, such as the opening of an information desk, the purchase of innovative diagnostic devices, or the financing of scholarships for young researchers.
