A Tribute to Palma Bucarelli: Fashion Show at the Gnam Museum

The fashion show in the Gallery of Modern Art (Gnam) of the collection of Daniela Otea, a Romanian designer, paid homage to Palma Bucarelli, a renowned art historian and critic, and iconic director of the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art (Gnam) from 1942 to 1975. This tribute took place in the very venue where Palma Bucarelli left her mark, giving it an abstract and informal imprint. The event, entitled “The Style of Palma – Art, Fashion and Music in the time of Palma Bucarelli”, was hosted by Nino Graziano Luca, who also signed the artistic direction.

An Evening of Art, Fashion, and Music

Promoted by the presidency of the Culture Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, with the patronage of the Romanian Embassy in Italy and the Italian Society of Authors and Publishers (SIAE), the event was organized by the Compagnia Nazionale Danza Storica. The director of Gnam, Cristina Mazzantini, along with Gabriela Dancau, Romanian ambassador to Italy, Francesca Del Bello, president of the II Municipality, Salvatore Nastasi, president of the Italian Society of Authors and Publishers, Federico Mollicone, president of the Culture, Science and Education commission of the Chamber of Deputies, and Professor Roberto Giuliani, professor of music, mass media and research methodology at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, were all present at the event.

A Celebration of Palma Bucarelli’s Legacy

Director Cristina Mazzantini highlighted the indissoluble bond between Palma Bucarelli and Gnam, recalling their avant-garde museum vision. The president of the II Municipality, Francesca Del Bello, underlined the importance of the initiative in the city panorama. Romania’s ambassador to Italy celebrated the cultural bridge between the two nations, while President Federico Mollicone exalted the role of Palma Bucarelli, whose foresight led the Italian artistic rebirth.

Daniela Otea’s Collection: A Reinterpretation of Palma Bucarelli’s Style

Daniela Otea’s collection aimed at a reinterpretation of the aesthetic strength of Palma Bucarelli, imagining her in our time, on different occasions of the day, restoring her decisive character, intellectual sophistication, and innate elegance. The collection featured midnight blue shirt dresses, lead-coloured pleated skirts from the 1950s, jumpsuits in soft and luminous silks, chiffon shirts with bows, suits in very fine cashmere, duster coats, and long waistcoats in light organza. The suits were made of corduroy or laminated fabrics worked with painterly shades of green and brown, while the evening suits were in iridescent and metallic colours, which changed according to the light and the angle of observation, alternating with fiery red Seventies suits.

A Night of Music and Dance

In addition to the fashion show, the reading of some love letters written by Palma Bucarelli to Paolo Monelli was alternated with two contemporary dance performances on the theme “Palma’s style” performed by the Compagnia Nazionale di Danza Storica, by Alessandro Trazzera and Rebecca Erroi, with the artistic direction of Nino Graziano Luca. The event was a celebration of Palma Bucarelli’s life and legacy, and a testament to the enduring power of art and fashion to inspire and uplift us.
