Revolutionizing Stroke Diagnosis: The Power of RapidAI
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in Italy, making timely and accurate diagnosis crucial for effective treatment. The Teramo Local Health Authority has taken a significant step forward in this regard by introducing RapidAI, a software based on artificial intelligence that enables speedy diagnosis of acute cerebrovascular diseases. This innovative system has been shown to improve clinical outcomes, and its impact is being felt at the Teramo Local Health Authority, which was one of the first in central Italy to adopt this technology.
How RapidAI Works
RapidAI supports multidisciplinary teams in the early diagnosis of stroke, providing a response time of less than five minutes. This allows for the rapid identification of patients who are candidates for revascularization therapies, a critical factor in treating stroke. The system analyzes CT and MRI images, providing doctors with vital information, including the localization and extension of the damaged brain area, the quantity of tissue at risk but potentially salvageable, and any occlusions of the large vessels. This information is presented through easy-to-read colored maps, enabling the clinical team to quickly establish the best course of treatment.
Real-World Impact
Since its introduction at the Teramo Local Health Authority in 2025, RapidAI has processed 1,039 tests for 620 patients, helping to identify 65 cases of ischemic stroke caused by the occlusion of large cerebral vessels. The average processing time is an impressive 271 seconds from receiving computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images. This swift diagnosis is critical in stroke treatment, as brain cells deprived of oxygen begin to die within minutes. RapidAI’s ability to detect all types of cerebral hemorrhage with a sensitivity of 98.1% and calculate the score that quantifies the extent of early ischemic damage has been instrumental in guiding treatment decisions.
Integration and Collaboration
The RapidAI system is integrated into a multidisciplinary path at the Teramo Local Health Authority, involving the Emergency Department, Diagnostic Radiology, Interventional Radiology, Stroke Unit (within Neurology), and Neurosurgery. The processing results are transmitted simultaneously to the hospital’s digital radiological archive and to the team’s mobile phones, allowing for immediate collegial evaluation even when specialists are not physically in the same place. This seamless collaboration has been key to the system’s success, enabling healthcare professionals to work together more effectively and provide better patient care.
