Unveiling the Timeless Tale of Mozart and Salieri in a New Series

The British screenwriter Joe Barton, known for the successful spy series Black Doves starring Keira Knightley, has brought a fresh perspective to the legendary story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. Interestingly, Barton was only one year old in 1985 when the film “Amadeus” by Czechoslovakian director Milos Forman won eight Oscars, including Best Film and Best Director. This cinematic masterpiece has been reimagined in a new serial form, drawing inspiration from Peter Shaffer’s 1978 English play, which in turn was inspired by the theatrical text “Mozart and Salieri” – a microdrama from Alexander Pushkin’s “Little Tragedies”.

The first two episodes of the five-part series, signed by Joe Barton for Sky and Now, have arrived, offering a new audience a glimpse into the life and talent of Mozart through the eyes of his historic enemy, Antonio Salieri. Played by Paul Bettany, Salieri appears at the beginning of the series as an aged man, having attempted to take his own life but survived due to a snow-covered ground. He is visited by Constance Mozart, to whom he had written a letter, and through their conversation, the story unfolds, rewinding the thread of history.

A New Interpretation of a Timeless Rivalry

Will Sharpe, known for his roles in “The White Lotus” and as the nerdy friend turned millionaire, portrays Mozart with a unique twist – as a character of mixed heritage, with an English father and a Japanese mother. This modern interpretation adds a fresh layer to the story, which explores the rivalry, talent, and challenge between the creative and chaotic Mozart and the methodical but mediocre Salieri. The series delves into the themes of jealousy, obsession, and the rumored, though historically unproven, slander that Salieri poisoned Mozart.

Joe Barton’s series fits into the contemporary vein of “period drama,” allowing for great historical freedoms while maintaining a philological approach to the soundtrack, featuring new recordings of works by Mozart and Salieri, conducted by English conductor Benjamin Holder. This blend of modern dialogue, provocative situations, and historical accuracy offers a captivating narrative that explores the complexities of artistic genius and rivalry.

A Story of Enduring Fascination

The tale of Mozart and Salieri continues to fascinate audiences, and this new series brings a fresh perspective to the legendary story. With its modern twists and historical roots, the series is set to captivate a new generation of viewers. For more information and to delve deeper into the world of Mozart and Salieri, visit Here
