Italian Magistrates Respond to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Comments
Italian magistrates have responded to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s comments regarding the campaign for the No to the referendum on justice and the judiciary. The National Association of Magistrates (ANM) stated that magistrates “carry out the task envisaged by the Constitution, that of applying the law and protecting rights” and have done so “in a balanced manner despite the heavy attacks received from many quarters.” The ANM emphasized that the constant delegitimization of magistrates and their work is “dangerous for the very maintenance of the rule of law.”
ANM’s Response to Meloni’s Comments
The ANM continued, “To make the justice machinery work more effectively, it would be desirable for the government to provide answers on the cuts in the budget law, on temporary workers and on the problems of IT and judicial construction. We have been asking for answers on these issues for some time to guarantee a better service to Italians.” This response comes after Meloni’s press conference, where she discussed the campaign for the No to the referendum on justice and the judiciary.
Meloni stated, “I have made a list of the responsibilities of magistrates on security issues, because I think that those who have roles of responsibility are called to that responsibility. It is what you remind me of every day and it is correct. But it is correct that it is done at 360 degrees, even for magistrates. The issue of delegitimization does not exist. You know what delegitimizes judges magistrates? The campaign that was carried out by the ANM in the stations, because if those who have the search for truth in their DNA write a lie to defend their very legitimate campaign against the referendum, this delegitimizes.”
Importance of Magisterial Independence
The ANM’s response highlights the importance of magisterial independence and the need for the government to support the justice system. The association’s comments also underscore the risks of delegitimizing magistrates and the potential consequences for the rule of law. As the debate surrounding the referendum on justice and the judiciary continues, it is essential to consider the perspectives of all parties involved and to prioritize the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability.
