Apple is targeting India for iPhone production

Apple’s Shift to India: A Strategic Move for iPhone Production

Apple has reportedly initiated negotiations with Indian manufacturers to assemble and package critical components for the iPhone, marking a significant shift in its production strategy. According to a report by the Economic Times, the tech giant is exploring the possibility of moving not only the final assembly of devices to India but also delicate phases of semiconductor processing, aiming to diversify its current production in China. The goal is to manufacture the majority of iPhones destined for the US market in India by the end of 2026.

Partnership with Cg Semi

At the center of these negotiations is Cg Semi, a company controlled by the Murugappa Group. The discussions concern a new semiconductor assembly and test facility known as Osat (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test), currently under construction in Sanand, Gujarat state. Rumors suggest that Apple is evaluating this site for packaging chips for displays. This potential partnership would enable Apple to tap into India’s growing semiconductor industry and reduce its dependence on Chinese manufacturing.

Economic Maneuvering

The strategy, as reported by Reuters, is not just a logistical response but an economic maneuver to deal with the instability of customs duties. In April, the US administration imposed tariffs of 26% on imports from India, lower than tariffs of more than 100% on Chinese goods in the same period. Although Washington has temporarily suspended most of these tariffs for three months, the exception maintained for Beijing serves as a warning to multinationals, pushing them to seek safer countries for their supply chains.

CG Semi’s Response

CG Semi told the Economic Times that it does not comment on market speculation or discussions with specific customers. “We will make appropriate communications as soon as we have something concrete to share,” the company stated. This response suggests that while the negotiations are ongoing, no official announcement has been made, and the details of the partnership remain under wraps.

Conclusion

Apple’s potential shift to India for iPhone production marks a significant development in the tech industry. As the company seeks to diversify its manufacturing and reduce its dependence on China, India emerges as a viable alternative. With its growing semiconductor industry and favorable economic conditions, India may become a crucial player in Apple’s supply chain. For more information on this story, visit Here
