Revolutionary Surgery: Italian Hospital Performs Rare Operation with Real-Time Expert Guidance from Paris
An 83-year-old patient with pancreatic cancer underwent a groundbreaking operation at the Ramazzini hospital in Carpi, Modena, using a technique performed in only a few centers in Italy. The surgery was made possible with real-time advice from an expert in Paris via smart glass technology. Dr. Mauro Manno, director of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy at the Modena Local Health Authority, wore smart glasses that allowed Professor Enrique Pérez-Cuadrado-Robles of the Georges Pompidou hospital in Paris to follow the operation and provide indications during all phases of the procedure.
A Complex Case: Severe Biliary Tract Obstruction
The patient, from outside the region, suffered from severe obstruction of the biliary tract and duodenum, which prevented bile from flowing into the intestine, causing progressive jaundice. To address this complex issue, the medical team performed an echoendoscopic hepato-gastroanastomosis. Under echoendoscopic guidance, they reached a branch of the biliary tract through a transgastric puncture of the liver, inserted a guide wire, and released a stent that allows bile to flow into the stomach. The operation, which lasted about an hour, was a success, and the patient has already returned home after a short hospitalization.
International Collaboration and Innovative Technology
The contact with the Parisian expert arose from a one-month internship that Dr. Paola Soriani, a specialist at the Modena Local Health Authority Endoscopy, carried out at the Pompidou hospital. The use of smart glasses in this operation marks a significant milestone, as they will be exclusively supplied to Endoscopy from 2022. According to Massimo Fabi, regional health councilor, “This intervention demonstrates the results we can achieve when we invest in the public health service and its ability to integrate into centers of excellence and the international scientific community. Investing in high medical specialization has positive repercussions for all our communities.”
