Friuli Venezia Giulia Leads Italy in Plasma Donation for Blood-Derived Drugs
Friuli Venezia Giulia has emerged as the top Italian region for plasma donation intended for industrial fractionation and the production of blood-derived drugs. According to data presented by the Friulian Blood Donors Association during their end-of-year press meeting, the region has maintained a strong trend in plasma delivery for industrial fractionation, aligning with regional planning at 29.5 kilos per thousand inhabitants. This achievement surpasses the national average, with Friuli Venezia Giulia recording the best national index of 24.8 kilos per thousand inhabitants, compared to Italy’s average of 15.4 kilos.
High Percentage of Plasma from Plasmapheresis
The region also stands out for having the highest percentage of plasma from plasmapheresis out of the total delivered, at 52.5%. This is significantly higher than the national average of 33.1%. The Friulian Blood Donors Association has around 51 thousand members, with 25 thousand active donors distributed across 193 sections throughout the territory. In 2025, the association collected 23,015 bags of whole blood and 10,536 units of plasmapheresis, exceeding their objectives set by the Regional Blood Centre by 1,231 and 491 units, respectively.
