Blue crab crisis devastates Italy’s clam farms

Italy’s Blue Crab Invasion: A Growing Threat to Clam Farms

Italy is facing a severe environmental crisis as the blue crab population continues to spread, devastating clam farms in central and northern regions. The situation has been exacerbated by drought and storms, which have created ideal conditions for the alien crustacean to thrive. According to experts, the loss of natural predators such as sea bream and sea bass has led to a fivefold increase in the blue crab population, with severe consequences for the clam industry.

The Orbetello lagoon in Tuscany is one of the areas most affected by the crisis, with 3,000 quintals of fish dying in 2024. Special Commissioner Enrico Caterino recently visited the area to assess the damage and map the spread of the blue crab. The situation is dire, with farmers and fishermen struggling to contain the invasion. “Even if we set out traps, it’s like emptying the sea with a bucket,” said Vadis Pesanti, producer and vice president of Confcooperative Fedagripesca Emilia Romagna. “There are many more crabs than last year.”

Impact on the Clam Industry

The blue crab invasion has crippled the clam industry, which is worth over €200 million. Sector leaders estimate that the crisis has left 800 workers without jobs, with many more at risk of losing their livelihoods. “The blue crab has brought this economy to its knees,” said Paolo Tiozzo, vice president of Confcooperative Fedagripesca. The industry is calling for a multi-pronged response, including scientific research, gastronomy, animal feed, and exports, to mitigate the effects of the crisis.

In Goro, Po Delta, storm surges have destroyed 30% of the protective fencing built to shield the last clam farms, leaving farmers fearing a complete collapse. The situation is equally dire in Veneto’s Scardovari, where every storm forces workers to rebuild clam-protecting nets. “There’s a constant risk that crabs will enter and wipe out even the harvested product,” said Paolo Mancin, president of the Consortium of Polesine Fishermen’s Cooperatives.

A Call to Action

The National Plan to Combat the Blue Crab, first applied in Veneto and Emilia-Romagna, may be extended to Tuscany to address the crisis. Commissioner Caterino has confirmed that the plan is being considered, and sector leaders are calling for immediate action to mitigate the effects of the invasion.
