Bluesky Updates with New Features, Introduces “Find Friends” Function in Italy and Other Countries

In the midst of the ongoing dispute between American startup Operation Bluebird and X over the use of the Twitter name and logo, Bluesky is rolling out new features to enhance user experience. One of the notable updates is the introduction of the “Find Friends” function, which allows users to upload their phone contacts to the app and search for registered friends. This feature is now available in several countries, including Italy, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Enhanced Privacy Features

Bluesky’s “Find Friends” function prioritizes user privacy, unlike its competitors. After verifying a user’s phone number and sharing their address book, the social network disguises the real sequence of each contact in a code, returning only the matches of people who have also verified their number. This means that if a friend uses Bluesky but hasn’t verified their mobile phone, they won’t be suggested as a user to add. Bluesky explains that it will store phone numbers as hash pairs, combining each number with that of each contact and adding random sequences to make the data more difficult to decode.

This encryption is also associated with a security key stored separately from the database, ensuring an additional layer of protection. According to Bluesky, this approach is designed to preserve user privacy while still allowing them to connect with friends and like-minded individuals on the platform.

Decentralized Platform and Federated Social Logic

Bluesky has been notable for its use of an open, decentralized platform. The main server, bsky.social, is managed by the company, but users have the freedom to move to other servers or create their own, fostering a “federated” social logic. This approach allows for greater flexibility and autonomy, as users can choose the server that best suits their needs and preferences.

As the social media landscape continues to evolve, Bluesky’s updates and features are likely to attract attention from users seeking a more private and decentralized online experience. With its “Find Friends” function and commitment to user privacy, Bluesky is positioning itself as a viable alternative to established social media platforms.
