Deadly Earthquake Hits Mexico: Aftershocks and Damage Reported
A devastating 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Mexican state of Guerrero, leaving at least two people dead and causing widespread damage. The epicenter of the quake was located in the San Marcos area, but its impact was also strongly felt in Mexico City. According to local authorities, a 56-year-old woman died when her home collapsed, while a 67-year-old man lost his life in Mexico City during evacuation operations, likely due to a cardiorespiratory arrest after a fall on the stairs.
Emergency Response and Aftershocks
The National Seismological Service reported that 546 aftershocks had been recorded as of early afternoon, with the strongest having a magnitude of 4.7. In Mexico City, Mayor Clara Brugada announced at least 12 injuries, as well as the fall of poles and trees, and electricity cuts in several neighborhoods. Preventive inspections on buildings and homes have begun, and emergency protocols have been triggered in major infrastructures, including airports, subways, and metrobuses. Minor damage was also reported in some hospitals and airports.
Assessing the Damage and Risks
Federal and state authorities have ruled out the risk of a tsunami, but warned of possible slight sea level changes along the coast. The earthquake has caused significant disruption, with many residents left to pick up the pieces and assess the damage to their homes and communities. As the people of Mexico begin to rebuild and recover, the authorities will be working to provide support and resources to those affected.
