End of an Era: Japan Says Goodbye to its Last Giant Pandas
Thousands of Japanese visitors flocked to the Ueno zoo in Tokyo to bid a final farewell to Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, the last two giant pandas in the country, before their scheduled return to China on Tuesday. The event marked a significant milestone, as Japan will be without giant pandas for the first time since 1972, when China donated a pair of specimens to Japan to commemorate the normalization of diplomatic relations.
The Ueno Zoological Gardens limited access to the last day of visits to 4,400 people, selected by lottery from over 108,000 requests. Despite this, many visitors still gathered at the zoo, hoping to catch a glimpse of the beloved animals one last time. Born in 2021 to a pair of animals on loan for breeding research programs, the two cubs are owned by China under international agreements and will leave Japan amidst new tensions in bilateral relations.
Panda Diplomacy and its Implications
The departure of Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei comes at a time when Japan-China relations are strained, particularly following Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent statements on the possible defense of Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack. The transfer of the two cubs to a facility in Sichuan province, where they will be quarantined before being exposed to the public, follows the return of four other specimens from the Adventure World of Wakayama in June. The absence of giant pandas in Japan is not only a symbolic loss but also an economic one, as these iconic animals have been a major tourist draw for over half a century.
