Rai Supervisory Commission: A Year of Muzzled Oversight

The president of the Rai Supervisory Commission, Barbara Floridia, has expressed deep concern over the state of the public service in Italy. According to Floridia, 2025 marked a historic low point for the Commission, as it was effectively muzzled by the majority, leaving the public service without any meaningful control. This unprecedented situation has raised serious questions about the health of Italian democracy.

“It had never happened in the history of the Republic that a guarantee body, created with the aim of protecting the citizens’ right to be informed, was muzzled by the majority on duty,” Floridia stated. The implications of this are far-reaching, and Floridia warns that the lack of oversight has had severe consequences. “2025 therefore saw a public service without any control, I would say for the happiness of the government,” she added.

A Call to Action for 2026

As the new year begins, Floridia is sounding the alarm and calling for change. “There is only one thing I ask for 2026. And it is that the institution that I represent as President of the Rai Supervisory Commission returns to functioning for the good of our democracy,” she emphasized. Despite her efforts to restart the Commission and engage in dialogue with the majority, Floridia reports that little progress has been made. “I tried with all of myself to restart the Commission, seeking dialogue with the majority, speaking with the political forces, asking for the intervention of the Presidents of the House and Senate, informing all the press, denouncing the institutional violence that was, and is, taking place in our democratic system in all the contexts in which I have been able to do so. I finally informed the President of the Republic. In a year nothing has happened.”

Floridia’s concerns are not limited to the past year; she is also worried about the future. “We cannot allow the same democratic crime of 2025 to be committed in 2026 at the hands of Meloni and her terrible and dangerous government,” she warned. The situation is complex, and the stakes are high. As the Rai Supervisory Commission continues to face challenges, it remains to be seen whether meaningful reforms will be implemented to ensure the integrity of the public service.
