Daniele De Rossi Receives Emotional Farewell at the Olimpico
Former Roma captain, Daniele De Rossi, returned to the Olimpico as an opponent for the first time, and the occasion was marked with a heartfelt tribute. The current Genoa coach was greeted with choirs, applause, and an emotional video showcasing his life in the Giallorossi. The club paid homage to him by displaying images of his time at Roma on the stadium’s big screens, followed by a long applause from over 65,000 fans during the announcement of the lineups.
A Bittersweet Return
De Rossi expressed his gratitude towards the Roma players who waited for him to come out and leave the pitch, saying, “They were fantastic, it was a shock for them too when I left. I have a great relationship with them, they were a wonderful 8-9 months with me and even if it wasn’t necessary I appreciate that they stayed here to say goodbye.” However, the former captain couldn’t hide his disappointment with the result, stating, “I would have liked to go there with a different result and not with a dark face, but I couldn’t go there to jump around because I’m not happy with the result.”
De Rossi’s emotions were palpable as he went under the Curva Sud, shaking hands with the fans on the balustrades. He also exchanged hugs with his former players, including Soulé, and Gasperini, before returning to the changing rooms. The Olimpico stadium erupted in applause, praising him as an opponent, and screaming his name as he made his way back to the tunnel.
A Night of Mixed Emotions
Despite the emotional farewell, De Rossi couldn’t help but feel a sense of bitterness, saying, “Gasperini is making this team fly, but I take away a great deal of bitterness from this night. It wasn’t a disastrous match, but a bit dull: we need to change as early as the next one at Ferraris against Pisa.” The former captain’s words reflect the complexity of his emotions, as he navigates his new role as an opponent, while still holding a special place in his heart for his former team.
