Breakthrough in Feline Infectious Peritonitis Treatment: GS-441524 Now Available in Pharmacies
The Undersecretary of Health, Marcello Gemmato, has announced that the active ingredient GS-441524, used in the treatment of Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), is now available from national suppliers and can be ordered from pharmacies for the preparation of master preparations, subject to veterinary prescription via electronic prescription. This development comes after reports of difficulties in obtaining the active ingredient, and Gemmato’s statement aims to reassure cat owners and the scientific community.
Understanding Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)
FIP is a viral disease caused by an alpha-coronavirus, which affects cats in high-density environments. With over 10 million cats in Italy alone, FIP is a significant concern due to its high prevalence and mortality rate. The disease has been a major worry for the scientific community and cat owners nationwide and in Europe, primarily due to the lack of authorized veterinary treatments.
Gemmato highlighted the urgency of addressing this veterinary health emergency and protecting animal welfare. In response, he issued a circular note in June 2025, allowing the use of the active substance remdesivir, contained in the medicinal product for human use Veklury, for the treatment of FIP. Remdesivir has been used to treat Covid-19, and its application in FIP treatment marks a significant step forward.
GS-441524: A Promising Alternative
Following further scientific insights, Gemmato extended the therapeutic possibility to GS-441524, the active metabolite of remdesivir, through a circular dated October 2025. GS-441524 offers significant clinical and organizational advantages, as it enables the preparation of master preparations for oral administration, unlike remdesivir, which can only be used intravenously. This development is expected to improve treatment outcomes for cats with FIP.
Additionally, structured training and professional development initiatives are planned to support the use of GS-441524 in veterinary practice. These efforts will help ensure that veterinarians are equipped to provide the best possible care for cats affected by FIP.
