Italy’s Commitment to Supporting Ukraine: An Interview with General Luciano Portolano

The Italian Defense continues to provide support to Ukraine through the supply of military materials, vehicles, and equipment, with a total value of over 3 billion euros. This was stated by General Luciano Portolano, Chief of the Defense Staff, in an interview with Il Sole 24 Ore. The support is authorized by 11 interministerial decrees and demonstrates Italy’s commitment to aiding Ukraine in its time of need.

General Portolano emphasized the importance of being prepared to react and support allies in an era where the boundaries of conflicts are blurred. “We live in an era in which the boundaries of conflicts are blurred – he adds – and attacks can hit critical infrastructures, communication networks, and cybernetic systems already in peacetime.” He stressed that it is essential to recognize the changing nature of conflicts and to be proactive in addressing these challenges.

Territories, Melons with Ukraine: Agreement on Weapons Decree

An agreement on the weapons decree was reached in the government and in the majority, on the eve of the Council of Ministers meeting to approve the measure for the extension of the authorization for the transfer of military vehicles, materials, and equipment in favor of Kiev. The agreement was reached after mediation with the League, with the priority for defense aid specified in the text.

General Portolano highlighted the importance of investing in all sectors, including cyber security, to ensure the sustainability of the conventional response, availability of armaments, readiness of forces, and technological evolution. The recent conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have underscored the need for a multidomain approach to defense, and Italy is committed to rebalancing its organic endowments in all sectors.

Italy’s Defense Strategy

The Defense approach, according to General Portolano, is oriented towards multidomain and overcoming technological asymmetries. The most significant item, 5.44 billion, concerns the maintenance of the operational conditions of the armed forces, which is the cornerstone of the sustainability of the military instrument. By investing in all sectors, Italy aims to ensure its defense capabilities are robust and effective.
