Unveiling the Monument for the Jubilee: A Masterpiece of Art and Faith
The cross, a towering 40 meters high, stands as the heart of the complex, adorned in hammered bronze and a travertine base enhanced with bas-reliefs depicting John Paul II blessing and the symbols of his pontificate. This magnificent structure is the result of Gino Giannetti’s intervention, carried out between 2005 and 2011, which transformed the previous installation inaugurated by Pope Wojtyła during the XV World Youth Day in 2000. The monument’s significance extends beyond its aesthetic value, as it represents a fusion of art, faith, and history.
The Book and Exhibition: A Celebration of Gino Giannetti’s Work
A new book, “The monument for the Jubilee” (De Luca Editori d’Arte, 2025), will be presented on January 28th, showcasing the complex executive steps of the monument’s creation. The volume, created thanks to the contribution of the University of Rome Tor Vergata and the Pericle Fazzini Foundation – Historical Archive, places the creation of the work in the context of the jubilee events of the new millennium. The book also celebrates the figure and work of Gino Giannetti, a pupil of Pericle Fazzini, known internationally for his monument “The Sail of Columbus”. An accompanying exhibition of sketches by the master will be on display, featuring projects such as the decorative complexes of the Swiss chapel in the Vatican and the chapel of Gesù Misericordioso in Rome.
Expert Insights and Presentations
The book presentation will feature a panel of esteemed speakers, including Alessandro Masi, General Secretary of the Dante Alighieri Society, Salvatore Italia, Central Councilor of the Dante Alighieri Society, Nathan Levialdi Ghiron, Rector of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Fabio Fabene, Secretary of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, Claudio Strinati, General Secretary of the Accademia di San Luca, and Roberta Serra, art historian. Gino Giannetti, the artist and author of the monument, will also be in attendance. The exhibition will be open to the public until February 9th, offering a unique opportunity to explore the master’s work and creative process.
