Italian Government Addresses Concerns Over ICE Presence at Milan-Cortina Olympics
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has downplayed concerns over the potential presence of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at the upcoming Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Tajani stated that “either one knows what they’re talking about or it becomes an emotional thing, but it’s not like they’re the ones on the streets in Minneapolis. I was the toughest one of all in Italy.” He further clarified that the issue is not about ICE agents arriving with machine guns, but rather about officials from a department responsible for anti-terrorism.
Tajani announced a meeting between Minister Piantedosi and US Ambassador Tilman J. Fertitta to discuss the coordination of ICE’s investigative component, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), with Italian authorities. The meeting aimed to address concerns over the protection of US athletes and delegations during the Olympics. According to the Ministry of the Interior, ICE agents will not have any external public order function.
Opposition Requests Information and Briefing
The opposition has requested information and a briefing on the matter, with a meeting scheduled for February 4th. Nicola Fratoianni, a member of the opposition, expressed concerns over the presence of ICE agents, describing them as “Trumpian militias” and “squads of cutthroats, murderers who cross America with total impunity.” Vittoria Baldino, a member of the 5-Star Movement, also called on colleagues to distance themselves from the situation.
Clarification on ICE’s Role and Presence
The Ministry of the Interior has clarified that ICE agents will be present in an operations room at the US consulate in Milan, where they will provide support for the management of major events abroad and liaison with Italian authorities. The agents will not have any operational role on Italian territory and will be responsible for consulting databases and supporting other actors involved in the event. The main targets of protection will be US Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Context and Precedent
The presence of ICE agents at the Olympics is not unprecedented, as they are part of the Diplomatic Service that follows and protects US representatives during international events. However, the controversy surrounding ICE’s role in the US has sparked concerns and criticism from the opposition and human rights groups.
