European Manifesto for Digital Health and Oncology Assistance: A New Era in Cancer Care
The fight against cancer has taken a significant step forward with the presentation of the first “European Manifesto for Digital Health and Oncology Assistance” in Brussels on January 13th. This landmark document, promoted by the Irccs Romagnolo Institute for the Study of Tumors “Dino Amadori” of Meldola, outlines a comprehensive plan to tackle the growing burden of cancer in Europe. With approximately 2.7 million new cancer diagnoses and 1.3 million deaths every year, the need for a unified approach has never been more pressing.
Objectives and Priorities
According to Nicola Normanno, scientific director of the Irccs “Dino Amadori”, the manifesto focuses on five strategic objectives to ensure continuity and coherence in European cancer policies. These include the recognition of health and the fight against cancer within the next FP10 Framework Program and in the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-2034. Additionally, the manifesto emphasizes the importance of digital health, with investments in interoperable, secure, and patient-centered systems. The consolidation of the European network of cancer centers EUnetCCC and the maintenance of the EU Cancer Mission are also highlighted as key priorities.
The recognition of precision oncology as a strategic investment for healthcare systems is another crucial aspect of the manifesto. As Normanno notes, “Our proposals are achievable, but a common effort is needed on the part of national and international health institutions.” He emphasizes the need to overcome the current limitations, including the fragmentation of scientific data, limited interoperability of systems, and disparities between different states. Despite some progress in recent years, these challenges must be addressed to ensure effective cancer care.
A Call to Action
The European Manifesto for Digital Health and Oncology Assistance serves as a call to action for national and international health institutions to work together towards a common goal. By prioritizing digital health, precision oncology, and the consolidation of cancer research and treatment networks, Europe can make significant strides in the fight against cancer. As the manifesto highlights, a unified approach is essential to ensure that all patients have access to the best possible care, regardless of their location or background.
