Valentino Garavani’s Final Farewell in Rome
A final farewell to Rome’s beloved Valentino Garavani. The coffin is in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Rome for the funeral, welcomed by the notes of Mozart’s Lacrimosa, accompanied by family members. Inside the church, only white flowers are present, and next to the coffin is a black and white photo of the smiling designer. The seats are all full, a testament to the impact Valentino had on the fashion world.
The Funeral Ceremony
Don Pietro Guerini, who celebrated Valentino Garavani’s funeral, said in his homily, “Valentino, I like to think of her in front of the Lord as she reaps the fruits of the beauty that she has sown in so many examples of life”. He also added that “beauty saves and produces dreams that change the world”. The ceremony was attended by many international VIPs, including Anne Hathaway, Anna Wintour, and Donatella Versace, among others.
A Life of Beauty and Fashion
Valentino Garavani passed away on January 19th at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy of beauty and fashion. The coffin remained overnight in Piazza Mignanelli, 23, where the funeral ceremony took place. After leaving for the Basilica, the body will be taken to the Flaminio – Prima Porta cemetery. Many have come to pay their respects to the last emperor of fashion, including Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, Councilor Alessandro Onorato, and fashion designers Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri.
Tributes and Farewells
Giancarlo Giammetti, Valentino’s former partner and right-hand man, paid tribute to the designer on social media, sharing a photo and an aria sung by Maria Callas. Anne Hathaway was also seen sharing a long hug with Valentino’s family in front of the Basilica. Brunello Cucinelli described Valentino as “a genius of the twentieth century, father of Italian fashion”, and Simona Ventura recalled the designer’s humor and kindness, saying “he told me you are not, let’s say, my most crowned ambassador, but the most tattooed yes”.
