Protests in Rome and Cities Across Italy Against Iran Regime

Amidst the escalating crisis in Iran, Amnesty International Italy and Women Life Freedom for Peace and Justice have organized a demonstration on the steps of city hall in Rome to express solidarity with the Iranian people. The rally, scheduled for 16:00 on Friday, aims to bring attention to the brutal crackdown by Iranian authorities on mass protests that have resulted in thousands of deaths and tens of thousands of imprisonments, all under a total internet blackout.

The Rome rally has garnered significant support from various civil associations and the Italian political world. Senior politicians from most political parties are expected to attend, including Partito Democratico (PD) leader Elly Schlein and 5 Star Movement (M5S) leader Giuseppe Conte, as reported by news agency ANSA. Additionally, the leaders of the Green Left Alliance (AVS), Angelo Bonelli and Nicola Fratoianni, and the secretary of Più Europa, Riccardo Magi, will be in attendance, along with the city’s centre-left mayor, Roberto Gualtieri.

Italian Political Support and International Response

Members of the centrist Italia Viva party and the centre-right Forza Italia, represented by city councillor Rachele Mussolini, are also expected to participate. Meanwhile, the leader of the centrist Azione party, Carlo Calenda, will join the Radicali at the march scheduled for Saturday at Piazzale Ostiense. Italy’s president, Sergio Mattarella, has condemned the “brutal massacre” of anti-government protesters in Iran, and Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajani has announced the withdrawal of all non-essential staff from the Italian embassy in Tehran.

Amnesty International Italy is organizing rallies in multiple cities across Italy, including Bari, Bologna, Florence, La Spezia, Lecce, Trieste, and Verona. These events aim to raise awareness about the human rights violations in Iran and to show support for the Iranian people. Global Solidarity and Calls to Action

The international community has been urged to take action in response to the crisis in Iran. The Italian government has advised all Italians in Iran to leave the country, citing concerns for their safety. As the situation continues to unfold, it is essential for individuals and organizations to come together in solidarity with the Iranian people and to demand an end to the violence and human rights abuses.
