Regional Elections in Italy: A Key Test for the Ruling Coalition

Three Italian regions, Campania, Puglia, and Veneto, are set to hold elections on November 23-24, in a closely watched vote that will test the strength of Italy’s ruling right-wing coalition government. The coalition, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has been in power for three years and is seeking to maintain its control over the regions.

The elections in Campania and Puglia, currently controlled by the center-left, and Veneto, governed by the right-wing Lega party, are expected to be highly contested. According to polls, the political landscape in all three regions is likely to remain the same, but Meloni has cautioned that “predictions can be proved wrong.” The coalition is particularly keen to wrest control of Campania from the left, with Meloni’s party, Fratelli d’Italia, fielding candidate Edmondo Cirielli.

Campania and Puglia: Center-Left Strongholds

Campania, governed by the center-left for over a decade, is seeing a tight contest between Cirielli and Roberto Fico of the left-wing, populist Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S). Fico is backed by the center-left Partito Democratico (PD) and is expected to win, according to polls. Puglia, another center-left stronghold, is likely to elect MEP Antonio Decaro (PD), a former mayor of Bari, as its new governor.

Decaro’s main challenger is entrepreneur Luigi Lobuono, who has the support of the right-wing coalition parties. In a final pre-election rally, Decaro cautioned that “thinking you’ve already won is the best way to lose,” and promised not to make unrealistic promises. The center-left has governed Puglia for 20 consecutive years, and the election is seen as a test of the coalition’s ability to challenge the status quo.

Veneto: A Bastion of the Lega Party

Veneto, a northern region, has been governed by the Lega party for 15 years, and the party’s candidate, Alberto Stefani, is widely tipped to win. Stefani has the backing of the governing parties in Rome and is seen as a continuity candidate, following in the footsteps of outgoing governor Luca Zaia. The Lega party has a strong base in Veneto, and the election is expected to be a test of the party’s enduring popularity in the region.

The regional elections in Campania, Puglia, and Veneto will take place on November 23-24, with voting scheduled from 07.00 to 23.00 on Sunday and 07.00 to 15.00 on Monday. The elections will be closely watched, both in Italy and internationally, as a test of the ruling coalition’s strength and the stability of the Italian political system.
