Italy Celebrates 125 Years of Puccini’s Tosca with Live Screening from Rome Opera House
Italy is set to mark the 125th anniversary of Giacomo Puccini’s iconic opera, Tosca, with a special live screening from Rome’s opera house on Saturday evening. The event, organized in collaboration with Italy’s culture ministry, will be aired worldwide on state broadcaster RAI 3 at 20.50 on Saturday, November 1. The production is a replica of the 1900 original, featuring a meticulously detailed reconstruction of Adolf Hohenstein’s original set and costumes.
A Tribute to Puccini’s Timeless Classic
Tosca, which had its world premiere in Rome on January 14, 1900, is widely regarded as one of the greatest operas of all time. The score, according to conductor Daniel Oren, is a masterful fusion of passion, desire, sex, and emotion, with a unique blend of drama and lyricism. The opera’s modernity is also highlighted by director Alessandro Talevi, who notes that Puccini’s settings require a deep psychological exploration by the singers and director. The production features renowned opera stars Eleonora Buratto, Jonathan Tetelman, and Luca Salsi, and will be conducted by Daniel Oren.
A Special Performance and Exhibition
The live screening will precede the opening of the new season at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, and will be broadcast live on RAI 3, RaiPlay, and worldwide. In addition to the performance, the opera house is also hosting an exhibition, Tosca 125: Oltre la scena, which brings Puccini’s masterpiece to life with the composer’s original score, sketches, photographs, letters, and costumes. The exhibition can be visited before and after performances, offering a unique glimpse into the creation and history of this beloved opera.
