More than four decades after his untimely death, Gaetano’s music remains incredibly popular in Italy. Every summer, fans gather in Rome for a live music event called Rino Gaetano Day, organized by his sister Anna and nephew Alessandro Gaetano. This year, to mark what would have been his 75th birthday, a special musical tribute will be held at Largo Venue in Rome. Additionally, state broadcaster Rai will screen a program dedicated to him, titled “Rino Gaetano, a singer-songwriter with a top hat,” on Rai Storia.
Life and Career
Rino Gaetano was born as Salvatore Antonio Gaetano in Crotone, Italy, on October 29, 1950. He moved to Rome with his family at the age of 10 and spent the rest of his life there. Gaetano made his musical breakthrough in 1975 with the song “Ma il cielo è sempre più blu,” which became a huge success. He soon gained a reputation for his satirical songs, which often targeted politicians and supported social protests. His powerful voice and original lyrics earned him critical acclaim and a loyal fan base.
Gaetano’s subsequent albums, including “Mio fratello è figlio unico” (1976) and “Aida” (1977), solidified his position as a prominent figure in Italian music. His song “Aida” is particularly notable for its originality and is considered an ode to Italy and its history. In 1980, Gaetano released his final album, “E io ci sto,” which marked a more serious tone and rock sound.
Tragically, Gaetano’s life was cut short in a car accident on June 2, 1981. He was driving home alone in Rome when he collided with a van, dying of his injuries a few hours later. Gaetano is buried in Rome’s Verano cemetery, and his tombstone reads: “But the sky is always bluer.”
To commemorate Gaetano’s 75th birthday, Sony Music Italy will release a new edition of his album “E io ci sto” on November 21, featuring remastered tracks and previously unreleased material. Additionally, cinemas in Italy will screen the new film “Rino Gaetano Semper Più Blu,” directed by Giorgio Verdelli, from November 24-26. The movie is an intimate portrait of the singer-songwriter, celebrating his musical and cultural legacy.
In 2020, Italy marked the 40th anniversary of Gaetano’s death by releasing a stamp in his honor, featuring the smiling musician in his trademark top hat against the background of a blue sky. This tribute is a testament to Gaetano’s enduring legacy and the impact he had on Italian music and culture.
