Italian Cities Unite in Protest Against Soaring Energy Bills

More than 8,000 towns and cities across Italy are taking a stand against the massive rise in energy prices by switching off the lights of their iconic monuments on Thursday night. This symbolic blackout, scheduled to take place at 20.00, has been organized by the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI) to draw attention to the significant increase in energy bills, which is estimated to be around €550 million for local councils. This substantial rise is part of a total annual electricity expenditure that fluctuates between €1.6 and €1.8 billion.

The ANCI president, Antonio Decaro, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the estimated 30% increase in energy bills would not allow local authorities to balance their budgets, potentially forcing them to cut essential services, including public lighting, which plays a crucial role in urban safety. Decaro told state broadcaster RAI News 24, “We have chosen to turn off monuments and symbolic public buildings for a few minutes, to attract the government’s attention… It is a problem that affects everyone, from companies to families up to local authorities.”

Unity Across Cities and Support from Government Officials

The mayor of Rome and former Italian finance minister, Roberto Gualtieri, has expressed his full support for the initiative, announcing that the lights of the Capitol city hall will be switched off this evening. Gualtieri acknowledged the difficulty that the increase in bills poses to families and institutions, especially during a time when the country is already facing challenges due to the pandemic. He stated, “It is a problem that must be addressed, and I am sure that the government will listen to the cry of alarm from citizens and mayors.” Other notable cities, including Milan, Florence, Turin, and Bologna, will also participate in the blackout, with iconic landmarks such as Palazzo Marino, Castello Sforzesco, Palazzo Vecchio, the Mole Antonelliana, and the Fountain of Neptune going dark.

The protest comes on the heels of Italian Premier Mario Draghi’s announcement that the government is preparing a multi-billion package of measures to mitigate the impact of surging energy prices. This move by the government indicates a recognition of the pressing issue and a commitment to finding solutions to alleviate the burden on citizens and local authorities. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how effective these measures will be in addressing the concerns of the Italian people.
