Italy’s Arctic Strategy: A New Frontier for Defense and Economic Interests

According to Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, the country that most borders the new piece of the world, the Arctic, is Russia, which has the largest presence in the region. Crosetto warned that once the war in Ukraine ends, a significant portion of Russian military resources will be moved to the Arctic sector. This statement was made during the presentation conference of the Italian Arctic Policy at Villa Madama.

Crosetto emphasized that NATO is also moving to concentrate its military policy in the North, closer to the Arctic, as demonstrated by Trump’s statements regarding Greenland. The minister highlighted the importance of the Arctic region, citing climate change, which will create new communication routes, potentially affecting 40-50% of passages through the Suez Canal. Italy must maintain a garrison, govern this future route, and have an economic, commercial, research, and military presence in the region, which will become increasingly strategic.

The minister recalled that the Defense department has been interested in the Arctic for some time, with the Navy, Air Force, and Army conducting exercises in the region. Crosetto stressed that these exercises are not new and involve more than just a few soldiers. He emphasized the need for a coordinated Western approach, rather than a fragmented national one, to address the challenges in the Arctic.

Crosetto added that the country, not just the ministries, must move forward, and that Italy’s strength lies in the synergy between administrations. He emphasized the need for someone to create rules in the Arctic region, which is currently a “no man’s land.”

Tajani: Preparing an Entrepreneurial Mission for the Arctic

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that Europe and Italy’s attention to the Arctic did not arise recently, but rather has been ongoing. Tajani presented the “Strategy of Italian Arctic Policy” at Villa Madama, emphasizing the region’s centrality.

Tajani announced that an entrepreneurial mission for the Arctic is being prepared, in collaboration with the embassy in Copenhagen. He highlighted Italy’s strategic vision, aiming to be at the forefront of exports in defense, energy, and space. The goal is to support Italian companies and maintain a presence in the Arctic region, which is a priority for the country.

Tajani emphasized the need for a common vision, stating that the Arctic is not a distant place, but rather very close. He stressed that Italy is a great country and will work together with other nations to achieve its goals in the region. The initiative launched is a starting point, not an arrival point, and Italy will continue to work towards its objectives in the Arctic.
