Kanye West Apologizes for Anti-Semitic Statements and Behavior

Kanye West, now known as Ye, has publicly apologized for his repeated anti-Semitic statements and extreme behavior, which have made him a controversial figure in the entertainment industry. In a full-page advert published in the Wall Street Journal, Ye acknowledges his responsibilities and says he has undertaken treatment for bipolar disorder.

Ye attributes his actions to a “four-month manic episode” in early 2025, characterized by “psychotic, paranoid, and impulsive” behavior that would “destroy his life.” He admits to a personal breakdown, saying, “There were times when I didn’t want to be here anymore.” Ye explicitly addresses his anti-Semitic utterances, pro-Nazi declarations, and use of the swastika, stating, “I have lost touch with reality” and is “deeply mortified” by what happened.

A History of Controversy

Ye’s anti-Semitic statements and behavior have led to a break with sponsors, commercial partners, and a large part of public opinion. In May 2025, he released the song “Heil Hitler” on the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany during World War II. The song was banned from main streaming platforms but remains available on the internet. This incident also led to the cancellation of his visa for Australia.

Ye’s apology comes on the eve of the release of his new album, Bully, and represents his most detailed attempt to distance himself from the provocations that have marked his recent artistic and media production. He will be on tour and will stop in Italy on July 18th in Reggio Emilia.

Mental Health and Accountability

Ye reconstructs the origins of his mental health problems, linking them to a serious car accident that occurred about 25 years ago. He says a lesion to the frontal lobe was not diagnosed at the time and only in 2023 did he receive a complete neurological evaluation, which led him to accept the diagnosis of bipolar disorder type 1 again. Ye describes bipolar disorder as “subtle” and says it makes it difficult to recognize the need for help.

Ye found support by reading online testimonies and thanks to the insistence of his wife, who pushed him to undertake a therapeutic path based on drugs, psychotherapy, and lifestyle changes. He says, “Bipolar disorder is subtle: when you’re in a manic phase, you don’t think you’re sick, you think others are exaggerating.”

A Path to Redemption

Ye’s apology is not the first time he has tried to retract his anti-Semitic statements, but this statement appears to be the most significant. However, it remains uncertain whether his words will be enough to mend relations with the music industry and the public. Ye concludes, “I don’t ask for compassion or shortcuts. I only ask for patience and understanding as I try to find my way home.”
