Italian Senate President Ignazio La Russa Seeks to Resolve Rai Presidency Conflict
The President of the Italian Senate, Ignazio La Russa, has promised to use “moral suasion” to resolve the ongoing conflict between the majority and opposition parties over the presidency of the national broadcaster, Rai. The dispute has brought the work of the Supervisory Commission to a standstill since the beginning of the legislature. La Russa’s commitment comes after a meeting with opposition group leaders, where he emphasized the need for urgent action, particularly in light of the upcoming referendum on justice on March 22 and 23.
Regulations for Equal Conditions
La Russa has called for the immediate convocation of the Supervisory Commission to approve regulations on equal conditions, which are essential for the referendum electoral campaign. These regulations, also handled by the Authority for Communications Guarantees, will govern the accreditation of political subjects, including referendum committees, and the allocation of spaces in the stands, round tables, debates, and cross-examinations, as well as electoral political messages. The electoral campaign officially began on January 14, with the publication of the President of the Republic’s decree calling for electoral rallies.
Breaking the Stalemate
The President of the Senate acknowledged the stalemate, framing the conflict as a disagreement between the opposition, which believes there has been no discussion, and the majority, which sees the proposed candidate, Mrs. Agnes, as a name of great institutional level. La Russa expressed his intention to attempt moral suasion to bring the two positions closer together. However, the president of the Supervisory Board, Barbara Floridia of the Five Star Movement, rejected La Russa’s offer, arguing that the issue is not about the level playing field or regulatory issues, but rather about enforcing the resolution and ensuring that Rai complies with it.
Concerns and Criticisms
Floridia criticized La Russa for diverting the discussion and pointed out that the majority has been using the failure to vote on Simona Agnes as political blackmail to prevent the commission from functioning. She also noted that La Russa could have included the opposition’s request to summon the Rai CEO to a hearing on the agenda of the Council for Regulations, but this request has been ignored for a year. Floridia’s concerns highlight the need for a more constructive and transparent approach to resolving the conflict and ensuring the proper functioning of the Supervisory Commission.
