Italian Leaders React to President Sergio Mattarella’s End-of-Year Speech
Immediately after Sergio Mattarella’s end-of-year message, Giorgia Meloni called the Head of State, expressing the government’s appreciation. The Prime Minister thanked Mattarella for having highlighted the profound meaning embodied by the eightieth anniversary of the birth of the Republic. Meloni reiterated that Italy will continue to do everything possible, at every level, so that peace can return to Ukraine, the Middle East and all areas of the world where war has taken over as soon as possible. He thanked him for the encouragement given to younger people, who represent the driving force of change and towards whom the care and attention of the institutions must be maximum.

This is the comment of the president of the Senate Ignazio La Russa to Sergio Mattarella’s end-of-year speech. The president of the Chamber Lorenzo Fontana also commented on the president’s words: «The strong call for peace and the attention paid to young people, at the center of the end-of-year message from the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, appeal to everyone.
The secretary of the PD, Elly Schlein, declared: “Mattarella has held together the past, present and future of our country. The memory of the dark years of terrorism defeated by national unity, his reference to the importance of preserving the social achievements of the universal health service and the social security system extended to all, the right to housing and fair wages, the commitment to peace and closeness to the Ukrainian and Palestinian people bind together memory, civil commitment and the vision of a better future”.

For the leader of the 5 Star Movement, Giuseppe Conte, «President Sergio Mattarella’s appeal to treasure the values of the Republic sees the M5S deployed on the front line to protect what unites us in the Constitution: peace, fairly paid work, social justice and defense of public health, welfare and the environment. The leader of Italia Viva, Matteo Renzi, stated: “Particular appreciation goes to the passage in which the President recalls that Italy prevails. A strong and important reminder on the 80th anniversary of the Republic”.

Foreign Policy and Peace
The Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani commented on the speech as follows: «Building peace in Ukraine, in the Middle East, in Sudan and in all parts of the world where people die due to wars will be the main commitment of our foreign policy and the best way to celebrate 80 years of the Republic». The federal secretary of the League Matteo Salvini underlines the president’s “wise call for peace”: “These are timely and wise reflections, which I hope will touch the minds and hearts of those who continue to talk about war to the bitter end.”
