Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Addresses Press Conference

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held a press conference on Friday morning, addressing a wide range of topics, from international crises to economic issues and internal reforms. The conference, which has become an annual tradition, saw Meloni respond to nearly 40 questions from journalists over the course of three hours.

Meloni emphasized that growth and security will be the primary focuses of her government in 2026. She also discussed her relationships with the Quirinale, the official residence of the President of the Republic, and President Sergio Mattarella, describing them as “excellent.” Meloni noted that while she and Mattarella do not always agree, they share a commitment to defending the national interest.

Security, Justice, and Electoral Reform

Meloni addressed several key issues related to security, including the need for cooperation between government, law enforcement, and the judiciary to guarantee security. She also expressed her dissatisfaction with the current state of juvenile justice, citing the ongoing problem of youth gangs and the need for further action. Regarding the upcoming referendum on justice, Meloni announced that the government will set a date by January 17th, with March 22 and 23 being the most likely dates.

The Prime Minister also discussed the reform of the electoral law, stating that discussions are underway with the opposition, although not necessarily at her level. She expressed hope for a positive discussion and warned that if there is closure, Parliament will decide by majority.

The International Front

Meloni turned her attention to international issues, including the situation in Ukraine and the potential for a multinational force to strengthen Ukrainian defense. She emphasized that Italy’s primary instrument for guaranteeing peace is Article 5 of NATO and expressed skepticism about the need for Italian troops to be sent to Ukraine.

The Prime Minister also addressed the Middle Eastern question, stating that it has not disappeared from the radar and announcing that Italy will contribute to security in the Strip. She also discussed the Arctic, stating that the Foreign Ministry will present an Italian strategy on the topic by the end of the month.

The Trentini and Crans-Montana Cases

Meloni addressed the cases of Trentini and Crans-Montana, expressing her commitment to ensuring justice for the families involved. She announced that the State Attorney’s Office has contacted the Swiss prosecutor’s office and the Rome prosecutor’s office, which has opened a file, and assured the families that they will not be left alone.

The Economy and Banks

Meloni discussed the economy, citing growth estimates for 2023 and expressing optimism about the potential for future growth. She emphasized the need to support employment, lower energy prices, and invest in key sectors. The Prime Minister also announced the upcoming presentation of a house plan, which aims to make 100,000 new homes available at controlled prices over the next 10 years.

Meloni addressed the issue of taxes, stating that they will not increase for most people, and announced that the government will not endorse predatory proposals related to the ex-Ilva. She also responded to criticism about the government’s handling of the recent risk, stating that market dynamics are to blame and that the government’s actions have been legitimate.
