A Heartwarming Christmas Miracle: Two Children Receive New Hearts
Just in time for Christmas, two young boys, Marco and Andrea, aged 6 and 8, received the greatest gift of all – a new heart. The boys had been on the waiting list at the Bambino Gesù Hospital for a transplant for some time, and their dream finally came true thanks to the generosity of the families of two other children who donated their hearts. The operations, performed on December 18 and 20, were successful, and after several days in a pharmacological coma, the children were “awakened” on Christmas Eve, allowing them to spend the holiday with their families in the intensive care unit.
A Complex and Rare Procedure
Andrea’s case was particularly complex, as he had a continuous sensitization of the immune system due to his congenital heart disease and previous operations. To overcome this, a new drug was used for the first time in the pediatric field to temporarily “deactivate” the hyperimmunity, making the transplant possible. The transplants were carried out by two different cardiac surgical teams led by doctors Lorenzo Galletti and Adriano Carotti. According to Dr. Rachele Adorisio, head of the Heart Transplant Program, “Organ donation at this age is very rare, so it was a real gift for our little patients. The transplant of an adult heart is possible, but the age difference is decisive for the prognosis of the transplant, and the fact that the donors are of the same age represents a great advantage in terms of the long-term good outcome of the operation.”
A Christmas Fairy Tale with a Happy Ending
Marco and Andrea’s story is an “exceptional” one, not only because of the rarity of the procedure but also due to the children’s resilience and positivity. Despite the challenges they faced, they remained vibrant and enthusiastic, with Marco even playing the pianola in the hospital. As Dr. Adorisio notes, “These children, marked by suffering, are actually great wise men who teach us a lot: they have and transmit a great passion for life, despite everything, and this is the engine that also gives us doctors the push to move forward every day.” The children will remain in the hospital for about a month, and another 12 children and adolescents are currently on the waiting list at Bambin Gesù for a heart transplant.

A Story of Hope and Generosity
The story of Marco and Andrea serves as a reminder of the importance of organ donation and the impact it can have on the lives of those in need. As Dr. Adorisio emphasizes, “They are small patients, but ‘small’ only in terms of age. In fact, these children are great wise men who teach us a lot.” For more information on this heartwarming story, visit Here
