The fields of Quantum and Artificial Intelligence are two distinct areas of study, yet they have a complementary relationship, according to Michel Devoret, the 2025 Nobel Prize winner in Physics and head of Google’s Quantum AI laboratory. Devoret, along with John Clarke and John Martinis, was awarded the Nobel Prize for laying the foundations for the construction of quantum computers. In an interview, Devoret emphasized the importance of combining Quantum and Artificial Intelligence, stating that “in a quantum computer you need AI to control it – because this helps to understand biases and, therefore, correct errors.” He further explained that quantum computers produce the data on which the AI is based, creating a symbiotic relationship between the two systems.

Understanding the Interplay between Quantum and AI

Devoret highlighted the example of AlphaFold, an AI model developed by Google DeepMind, which earned its creators the 2024 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. AlphaFold allows for the prediction of the 3D structure of proteins from their composition, with significant implications for scientific research. Devoret noted that “AlphaFold is based on a huge database that has been put together through decades and decades of painstaking experiments.” He added that quantum computers can accelerate the production of this data, which is particularly important in the field of chemistry. By combining Quantum and AI, researchers can carry out cross-checks between the two systems, leading to more accurate and reliable results.

Addressing Concerns about Quantum Technology

When asked about the potential risks associated with the applications of his research, Devoret stated that the world of Quantum does not currently pose significant concerns. He mentioned that cryptography is moving towards post-quantum codes that cannot be broken by a quantum computer, ensuring that communications will be secure. Devoret emphasized that by the time a quantum computer is capable of breaking communications, researchers will have already developed safeguards to protect against this risk.
